First words book for babies: what to look for
A first words book is one of the earliest objects a child will interact with intentionally. They'll point at it, hold it, chew it, and — eventually — start naming what they see. Choosing the right one matters more than most parents expect.
The market is full of word books for babies and toddlers, but many of them make the same mistakes: too many images per page, cartoonish illustrations that don't resemble real objects, and flimsy paper that falls apart after a week. A good first words book should do less, not more.
Why fewer words are better
Research in early childhood development consistently shows that children learn vocabulary best when they can focus on one object at a time. A page with twenty small illustrations teaches recognition; a page with four clear ones teaches naming. The difference is subtle but significant. When a child points at an apple and a parent says the word, a connection forms. That moment requires space — visual space on the page, and emotional space in the interaction.
What makes a good board book
Board books are made from thick cardboard rather than paper, which makes them durable enough for babies who grab, bend, and mouth everything they touch. The best board books use rounded corners for safety, matt or satin lamination that doesn't reflect light into a child's eyes, and inks that meet EN 71 toy safety standards.
Weight and format matter too. A square book around 180 mm is easy for small hands to hold. Anything much larger becomes unwieldy; anything smaller doesn't give illustrations enough room to breathe.
Bilingual first words books
For families that speak more than one language at home, a bilingual first words book can be a natural way to introduce vocabulary in both languages simultaneously. Rather than separate books for each language, a bilingual format presents both words together, reinforcing the idea that every object has two names — both equally real, both equally theirs.
